1956 Mickey Mantle First Sports Illustrated Magazine (Newsstand Edition) Cover, CGC 8.5. Presented June 18, 1956 issue of SI represents Mantle's first appearance on the cover of the iconic publication. It's surprising that it took SI so long to select him. For the previous two years, he was getting beat out by exciting cover stars such as a trumpet player, English setter, shoveller duck and plaid golf bag.
