Description

1955 Oakland Oaks Last Home Plate. Historic relic serves as the tombstone for one of the most significant franchises in Pacific Coast League history, a fifty-three year history that saw legends from Casey Stengel to Ernie Lombardi to Mel Ott wear the uniform. This plate was acquired by our consignor from the estate of famed hobby icon Dick Dobbins, with whom our consignor organized a major exhibition on the history of the PCL that traveled through several venues including the Oakland Museum, the Autry Museum of Western Heritage and the San Diego Historical Society.

The plate is pictured in Dobbins' 1999 book on Bay Area baseball, entitled The Grand Minor League, and will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from our consignor, also a published author on the topic of the Pacific Coast League. It was Dobbins himself who dug up the home plate from Oaks Stadium after the last out had been recorded, and he who emblazoned its battle-scarred surface with the words "Oaks Baseball Park, Died September 1955." The plate is mounted on a green wood backing for display. Letter of provenance from consignor.
