Description
1953 New York Yankees World Series Championship Ring (Red Patterson, Public Relations). A solid argument could be made that this is the most impressive of all Major League championship rings. While modern monstrosities have this one beat for sheer size and component value, it's pretty safe to say that the record this specimen celebrates is nearly as safe as Cy Young's career tally of 511 pitching victories. The number "5" that cradles a large genuine diamond on the ring face reminds us that 1953 was the fifth consecutive season to find the Bronx Bombers as the last team standing in October. The "New York Yankees World Champions" text that encircles that digit may be a common sight, but that streak of dominance is unmatched. The shanks are identical, featuring the bat and hat team logo below "1953" and framed by victory laurels. Interior band is stamped, "Balfour 14K" and engraved, "Arthur E. Patterson," although his buddies called him "Red." While Patterson was a true unsung hero of the postwar game, popularizing Old Timers events and fan giveaways, as well as hiring the beloved Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard, his greatest claim to baseball fame is his responsibility for coining the phrase, "tape measure home run."
It was actually this season, on April 17, 1953, that Patterson marched off Mickey Mantle's legendary Griffith Stadium blast from home plate to a backyard across the street, finalizing the distance at 565 feet. "I saw Babe and Lou hit balls out of parks all over the country, also I was catching when fellows like Jimmie Foxx were blasting pitches a good country mile. Frankly, I never thought I'd see their like again, but now I've changed my mind," said Yankees coach Bill Dickey that day.
The ring is in spectacular condition, suggesting that Patterson was not one to flaunt his success. It measures to a size ten (10) and weighs thirty-four grams (34 g.).
Guide Value or Estimate: $30,000 - up.

Auction Type
Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding and you must be on an individual lot page to reflect the accurate time remaining for that particular lot.
