Consigned by the grandson of St. Louis Cardinals scout

    1950 Willie Mays Scouting Report.
Hobby fireworks exploded over the Dallas world headquarters of Heritage Auctions just weeks ago when the 1992 scouting report that brought Derek Jeter to the notice of the New York Yankees organization commanded a six-figure price tag after a protracted bidding war for ownership. The glowing assessment of the 2020 first-ballot Hall of Famer stands today as the most vibrant feather in the cap of the report's author, Yankees scout Dick Groch.

The same could be said for St. Louis Cardinals scout Gene Corbett, who saw enormous potential in a teenaged kid from Alabama by the name of Willie Mays, then representing the Class-B affiliate of the New York Giants in Trenton. Though the Cards were ultimately unable to dislodge the gifted outfielder from the Giants system, this humble relic is certain to leave St. Louis faithful with thoughts of what might have been.

In each specific metric for assessment, Corbett characterizes Mays as alternately "good" or "great," offering his overview on verso which recalls the racial sensibilities of 1950 America in its opening statement:

"This boy is u colored /u , a rookie--a tremendous prospect. He could play in AAA next year. Has best reflexes and coordination I've seen for a long time. Also best arm. Hitting around .400."

The 4x6" "Scout Report Card" is filled out in 9+/10 pencil and exhibits no condition issues beyond general handling and storage wear. It comes to us directly from the son of Corbett, with his letter of provenance. A thrilling relic from the infancy of one of the greatest careers in American sports. Letter of provenance from family of scout.
