Description

1950 Ty Cobb Handwritten Letter & Signed Large Photograph with Special Significance. It's a heartwarming and heartbreaking tale, one that clearly moved a man with a well-earned reputation for toughness. The iconic Cobb offers his apologies and condolences to a mother and father who had years earlier buried the son they had named for the reigning Hit King. Cobb explains that he had only just come upon a letter misplaced in his home four years earlier that told the tragic tale, and he expresses his regrets for the terrible loss and his long delay in response, and his gratitude for being honored as the namesake of their fallen son.

He ends the two-page handwritten letter on his personal letterhead, "I am taking the liberty of sending an autographed baseball picture, hope I am not out of order in doing so, I am autographing it to your son. With my very kindest regards, I am, most sincerely, Ty Cobb."

Framed with that two-page letter is the photograph to which Cobb refers, an unusually large 10x13" black and white portrait of the first Hall of Famer in the uniform of the Philadelphia Athletics. It is inscribed, "This is for Ty Cobb Scott, I feel greatly honored, From Ty Cobb."

The letter exhibits a few insignificant tape stains, with ink ranging from 8/10 to 10/10. The photo shows a few creases in the western half but still presents very well. Inscription rates 8/10. Framed dimensions of display are 19x33". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
