    Description

1948 Boston Braves National League Championship Ring Presented to Outfielder Jeff Heath. He was one of the premier sluggers of the late 1930's and early 1940's, twice leading the American League in triples, averaging .340 or better with 100+ runs batted in each time. But controversy followed Heath like a shadow, and he often battled with managers and front office men, once punching a fan during a home game in Cleveland. "There was the inimitable Heath who...should have been one of the greatest players in history," sportswriter Franklin Lewis explained. "But there were no valves on his temper. He grinned in the manner of a schoolboy or he snarled with the viciousness of a tiger."

Only once during Heath's fourteen Major League seasons did his team participate in the Fall Classic, but the star outfielder had to watch the 1948 World Series from the dugout, having suffered a fracture of his ankle in a late-season game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Though he'd return briefly in 1949, the injury effectively ended Heath's career.

Heath was properly remembered by his team for his essential contributions in claiming the franchise's first National League flag since the Miracle Braves of 1914, and that memento is presented here. The elegant ring features a large genuine diamond set into a red stone on the face, with raised text at the perimeter announcing, "National League Baseball Club of Boston, League Champions." Left shank is adorned with an array of baseball-themed imagery, while right supplies the "1948" vintage above a team logo Indian head. Interior band is engraved "Geoffrey Heath" and stamped with the maker's mark of Rochester jeweler EJ Scheer and the "10K" gold designation.

Ring exhibits proud wear but presents well. Size eleven and a half (11.5). An included 1997 letter of provenance from a well-known memorabilia dealer states the ring was purchased from Heath's daughter in the early 1990's.
