1946 Negro League All-Star Game West Team Photograph. The greatest stars of the Negro Leagues would face off twice in the summer of 1946, first at Washington's Griffith Park and then in Chicago at Comiskey. As a handwritten notation indicates, this photo was snapped at the latter, where 42,000 fans watched the West emerge with a four to one victory over their Eastern counterparts. We see uniforms of the Birmingham Black Barons, the Memphis Red Sox and the Kansas City Monarchs among the players who pose in front of the packed grandstands, each identified in an unknown hand in vintage black fountain pen ink. Some staining appears at upper left, but to little ill effect, and the 8x10" image otherwise presents very well. Quality original Negro League photography is very rare today, and highly coveted by knowledgeable collectors.
