Description

1946 Correspondence Between Ed Delahanty Family and Baseball Hall of Fame. Quartet of typed letters dates to 1946, a year after Big Ed's posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The text mainly regards the donation of Delahanty's silver trophy bat presented to him by the Philadelphia Phillies. The family makes the Hall of Fame aware of its existence and offers to donate, with the Hall responding with its interest and later news of its successful arrival. Three of the letters are signed by Hall of Fame director Ernest Lanigan, the other from Delahanty's daugther Florence. Two original mailing envelopes are here as well, along with a period stat sheet likely supplied to the family by the Hall of Fame. All pieces show handling wear but no problems of any significance. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.

The Ed Delahanty Collection

This lot derives from the family of Hall of Fame outfielder "Big Ed" Delahanty, one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished a Major League season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's legacy remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls. This remarkable archive offers an inside look into the life of one of the greatest figures in baseball.
