Description
1945 Oscar Charleston Double Signed Check. One of the toughest of all Baseball Hall of Fame autographs, genuine Oscar Charleston exemplars have been identified fewer than ten times in the collecting hobby. We produce two of them here, applied to the verso of a check making payment to Charleston for his managerial service to the Brooklyn Brown Dodgers of the United States League. If the league does not sound familiar, there is good reason--it had been the brainchild of Branch Rickey, who envisioned it as a farm club of sorts to develop African-American players for their eventual integration into the Majors. It is a point of speculation as to whether the league ever got off the ground, but the presented check confirms its existence.Though Charleston had hung up his spikes for good after his service to the 1941 Philadelphia Stars at the age of forty-five, his vast experience and great intelligence made the man considered by many to be the greatest Negro League player of all time an obvious choice for the skipper role. His black fountain pen ink signatures each rate a stunning 9+/10, one entirely clear of the bank's stamping and the other intersecting but to no major distraction. The check itself exhibits a vertical center fold but no other condition issues of note. Considering the extreme scarcity of Charleston signatures, one could rightfully assume that an opportunity such as this will not surface anytime soon, if ever again. Bid accordingly. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
