1944 Stan Musial Signed St. Louis Cardinals Uniform Player's Contract. After a brief holdout in spring training of 1943, the young slugger came to terms with the Cardinals and posted a season for the ages, leading the National League in hits, doubles, triples, batting average and slugging percentage to coast to his first of three MVP Awards. So the Man entered 1944 contract negotiations with extraordinary leverage, advancing from his $6,250 salary for 1943 to an even $10,000 for the year this contract represents.

It would prove to be money well spent, as Musial again slugged his way to the top of the Senior Circuit, and was instrumental in the four games to two World Series victory over the St. Louis Browns to conclude the season.

The standard format contract was executed October 3, 1943, just two days before the start of the 1943 World Series, and is signed on page two by both Cardinals team president Sam Breadon and Musial himself, each in 9/10 black fountain pen ink. National League president Ford Frick signs the cover (9/10). A typed notation reminds us of the tense geopolitical context, reading, "It is agreed that Contract covers the services of the Player for the year 1944, or if Baseball suspends, covers the first year that Baseball is played after the 1943 season." Condition is very strong, with original storage folds and very minor adhesive residue at top edge, the result of an earlier framing. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
