The Cardinals earn St. Louis bragging rights with victory over crosstown Browns

1944 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Championship Pocket Watch Presented to George Munger. The 1944 Fall Classic was the first since the 1922 New York Giants and Yankees shared Polo Grounds residency that the final conflict to determine Major League supremacy was waged upon a single battlefield. Aided by the reshuffling of the Major League hierarchy that the Second World War manifested, the lowly St. Louis Browns found themselves in the unlikely role of American League Champion, while the perpetually front-running Cardinals remained the dominant force of the Senior Circuit.

There would be no David and Goliath story at Sportsman's Park, as the Cardinals, coming off a 105-victory regular season, conquered the Browns in six games to earn the hardware we present here. This is pitcher George Munger's personal model, recalling the finest statistical season of his career, punctuated by an eleven and three record and a microscopic 1.34 earned run average. He would miss the Series due to military service, but was properly remembered by the team in the wake of its Championship realization.

A gorgeous silver dial reports all we need to know, with the birds and bat logo perched atop "World Champions" text, and the hour markers populated by letters and numbers reporting, "Cardinals '44." Reverse of the top-quality Gruen timepiece is engraved, "George Munger." Minimal wear is evident upon the face at close inspection, while the fourteen karat (14k) gold casing is remarkably clean. Diameter is approximately 1.75". A seven-inch long (7") gold chain remains attached, and the watch runs with a turn of the crown, though we are unsure how well it keeps time. Certainly it is the finest example we've ever encountered of this handsome rarity.
