Rare Championship hardware from the "St. Louis Showdown"

1944 St. Louis Cardinals Ring Presented to Bob Keely. To date, there have been fourteen "Subway Series" in Fall Classic history--battles for baseball's highest honor waged entirely within the borders of New York City--but only once has another city enjoyed every inning of World Series action. It came during the 1944 Major League season, the World War II draft throwing the standard trends of baseball dominance out of kilter and supplying the perpetual basement-dwelling St. Louis Browns its sole American League pennant and the right to face the St. Louis Cardinals for the World Championship.

It took six games at Sportsman's Park to establish the Senior Circuit representatives as the victor--the fifth of eleven franchise World Championships to date--setting into motion the production of rings like the presented specimen. The lucky recipient was Bob Keely, a man whose Major League stat line is comprised of just two games and a single plate appearance. In later years he would serve with distinction as a coach for the Braves and a scout for the Cardinals and Dodgers.

A genuine diamond adorns the face of the elegantly understated design, set into a silver baseball with ruby inlays and crossed bats, and encircled by raised text announcing "World Series Champions 1944." The Cardinals' birds and bat logo and "1944" designation appears at each shank, the sharp detailing suggesting only limited wear and leaving the relic in markedly superior condition to the model Heritage auctioned for $16,730 in November 2013.

Interior is stamped "14K" and "HJ Co," the latter a Herff-Jones maker's mark. Engraved inside is the text, "Presented to Robert Keely by Baseball Commissioner." Band measures to size ten. Just the fourth example to surface on the hobby's major auction block in the past fifteen years. Letter of provenance from brother of Bob Keely.
