1944 Marty Marion National League MVP Presentational Watch. While he was adequate at the plate, Marty Marion won this 1944 National League MVP watch largely for his defensive play at shortstop. One of the greatest shortstops of his generation, Marion was one of the very few stars who avoided military service during World War II, making his contributions to the game in the years 1943-1945 all the more important. The Longines 14K gold watch is a surprisingly humble looking wristwatch that belies its historical importance. Although there is a chip out of the front bezel, the watch appears to be in working order when wound. The real beauty lies in the engraving on the verso:

"Presented to M.W. Marion Shortstop Cardinals By The Sporting News - Most Valuable Player in National League 1944."

Aside from the bezel chip, the watch is in Fine condition with a working clasp on the band. A truly historic piece from baseball's war years.
