Description
1944-45 Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Cap Attributed to Eddie "Bazooka" Basinski. A classical violinist who occupied a chair in the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra, Branch Rickey referred to Basinski as "the escaped divinity student" while Dodgers' manager Leo Durocher called him "Bazooka" because of his rifle throwing arm.In 1945, although there was no All-Star Game that season due to the war, the Associated Press named two unofficial teams after polling managers, and Basinski and the Cardinals' Marty Marion were selected as the two NL shortstops. "A lot of people think musicians are pantywaists," Basinski one said. "That's a bunch of nonsense."
This completely original blue felt cap, with white button and razor thin, embroidered Brooklyn "B," remains in fine condition with six vent holes in the crown, vibrant blue coloration, a perfectly soft and supple visor, and no tears or staining.
While the cap does not report an embroidered name or embroidered/written uniform number, "E. Basinski" is present on the font portion of the white leather headband in faded blue ink. Furthermore, the specifications of the cap are clearly correct for the period, with the Spalding tag in the headband the proper style for the term of Bazooka's service to the Dodgers.
It must also be stressed that professional model caps were not available for retail sale in the 1940's as they are today, so there is no question but that it was once worn by a genuine Dodger. Admittedly, proving ownership by any specific player is impossible at this stage, but it's a highly collectible style regardless. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
