Description

1943 Letters to Stan Musial from St. Louis Cardinals Regarding Tense Contract Negotiations. Dramatic trio of letters finds the legendary slugger and the team he represented for the entirety of his Hall of Fame career flirting with divorce. The first is a cover letter accompanying a $5500 contract for the 1943 season, dated February 3rd. The second, exactly a month later, is a response to Musial's negative response to those terms, and he is reminded, "We have had great outfielders on our ball club, including Hafey, Medwick, Terry Moore and Slaughter, and none of them in their second year received a contract for as much as the $5500.000 written into your contract for 1943." Apparently this fails to convince Musial, as the third and final letter warns that the desired salary "is impossible," and advise that he report to St. Louis "and if you do not sign a contract, and want to stay out of baseball in 1943, we will pay your round trip expenses." Each is signed in 9/10 or better black fountain pen ink by Sam Breadon (team president) and includes original mailing envelope. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
