Description

Likely used during the 1946 World Championship season!

1943-50 Stan Musial Game Used Fielder's Glove. Though he's best remembered as the greatest offensive threat of the National League post-war game, reaching fourth on the career hit list with a staggering 3,630, it shouldn't be forgotten that The Man was no slouch with the leather either, recording 3,730 outs (exactly 100 more than his hit total) in his defensive role. Leading expert and author of "The Glove Collector" newsletter Joe Phillips provides the authentication paperwork and range of production of this Rawlings T70 RY model, though the first baseman's mitt format very likely narrows the vintage to the St. Louis Cardinals World Championship season of 1946, during which Musial played 114 games at the primary sack. Each of the other years finds Musial active mainly in his standard outfielder role.

Wear is very heavy, suggesting a long and active service to the iconic slugger, whose vintage number "6" still resides on the exterior thumb of the southpaw model relic. A more recent black sharpie autograph (10/10) resides just above. The black "Rawlings" manufacturer's label is minimally damaged at the wrist but still presents well and is correct for the era. The leather lacing at the pocket, typically damaged or absent in gloves of this era, remains solid and complete here.

The recent success of "The Stan Musial Collection" in Heritage's November 2013 Signature Auction served as proof of The Man's enduring legacy, and a strong indicator that the investment outlook for his memorabilia is bullish. With Musial game used gloves even more scarce than his uniforms, collectors would be correct in concluding that such optimism is particularly justified here. LOA from Joe Phillips. The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
