    Description

1942-43 War Bonds Games Ephemera Lot of 9 Includes Babe Ruth Last Home Run Ticket Stub. On August 23, 1942, the Yankees hosted Ruth and a number of baseball legends who participated in an exhibition War Bond game at Yankee Stadium to rally baseball fans around the war cause. After the game there was a double header between the Yankees and Senators.

Babe Ruth always seemed to rise to the top when the spotlight was upon him. On this day, the Sultan faced off against fireballer Walter Johnson and, true to form, hit a home run at the house he built. It would be the last one he ever hit on a Major League baseball diamond.

This lot includes a "Yankees vs Washington...Benefit Game, Army and Navy Relief Funds" ticket stub (NM); two programs (one for each game of the Yankees-Senators double-header which followed the benefit game, scored in pencil, EX); four black and white original photographs picturing Ruth and Johnson, including Ruth batting and rounding third; and a full ticket (NM) from the 1943 War Bond Game at the Polo Grounds on August 26th which was reported to have raised $800 million. Prior to the game, the New York Journal American presented the "Tableau of Yesterday" which featured seven of the twelve then-living Hall of Famers, including Ruth, Wagner, Johnson, Speaker, Collins, Sisler, and Mack.
