Description1941 New York Yankees World Championship Ring Presented to Spurgeon "Spud" Chandler. New York City has long been celebrated as the world's cultural melting pot, but the starkest of lines divided its residents through baseball allegiance when three of the sport's premier franchises shared an uneasy Big Apple cohabitation. In the 1920's it had been the Yankees and Giants slugging it out for Fall Classic supremacy, but by the early 1940's National League dominance had completed its southeastern shift from Coogan's Bluff to Flatbush Avenue. The year 1941 saw the first of seven World Series battles between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, by far the most familiar pairing in the history of Major League Championship baseball.
But if the pairing was common, the appearance of rings from that fabled rivalry is anything but, a fact that this remarkable Platinum Night event shouldn't obscure. This is the very first World Championship ring from the 1941 Yankees, a team best remembered for Joe DiMaggio's peerless fifty-six game hitting streak, that Heritage has ever had the honor and good fortune to present.
It was issued to ace right-hander Spud Chandler, author of ten of the team's 101 regular season victories and hard-luck loser of a well-pitched World Series Game Two start, the Georgia native's first taste of October action.
The gorgeous creation by jewelers Dieges & Clust is identical in design to Yankee Championship hardware of the 1930's, with a large (replaced) diamond at the center of a silver figural baseball diamond on the face. "New York Yankees World Champions" stands in raised lettering at the perimeter, though proud wear has smoothed the detailing beyond legibility. Matching shanks feature an eagle in flight with text announcing "New York" and "1941," but again these details have been eroded by years of wear. Engraving at interior band remains readily legible however, reading, "Spurgeon Chandler" beside the "D&C 14K" maker's mark. Band measures to a size ten and a half (10.5). Letter of provenance from the Chandler family.
