1941 Moe Berg Twice-Signed Check. Moe Berg's significance lies in his unique dual legacy as both a Major League Baseball player and a World War II spy. Though a journeyman catcher with a modest playing career, he was highly educated, fluent in multiple languages, and respected for his intellect. During the war, Berg served with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), where he gathered intelligence in Europe, including missions to assess Germany's atomic program.
