1939 New York Yankees World Series Championship Ring Presented to George Weiss.UPDATE: This lot will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from the nephew of George Weiss.
It was one of the most historic years in baseball history, a centennial season that saw the debut of Ted Williams, the sad farewell of Lou Gehrig, and the ribbon cutting of the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. The final out of the 1939 season, a bottom of the tenth liner into the glove of shortstop Frankie Crosetti at Crosley Field, would supply the last distinguishing mark on the year's baseball calendar, establishing the New York Yankees as the first team in Major League history to win four consecutive World Series titles.
That unprecedented achievement is commemorated here with a ring presented to one of the many Hall of Famers on the 1939 Yankees payroll, then the head of player development and father of the most successful farm system of the era. Between 1932 and 1960, Weiss would earn a staggering fifteen World Championship rings and credit as one of the most essential architects of those decades of dominance.
This model features a large, genuine diamond set into a silver figural baseball diamond on the ring face, with raised text announcing, "New York Yankees World Champions" at the perimeter. Each shank pictures a bald eagle in flight, clasping a "New York" banner in its beak. Interior band is stamped "D&C 14K" and engraved, "George Weiss." Proud wear has affected the sharp relief of the ring's detailing, but it still presents very well and the enormous appeal of such special vintage is entirely unaffected. Size 9.25. Letter of provenance from nephew of George Weiss.
