Description

1939 Napoleon Lajoie Signed 1909 Sporting News Supplement, PSA/DNA Mint 9. The man so beloved in Cleveland that the team was named in his honor was flying high when a fan presented him with a thirty-year old photographic image to autograph in late June of 1939. Just weeks earlier, Lajoie had been one of twelve legendary players present at Cooperstown, New York for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies of the Baseball Hall of Fame, part of an inaugural induction class that included Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, Young and more.

The vast majority of autographed material from that historic event bears the far more common "Larry Lajoie" signature variation from the Dead Ball Era great, but we suspect that the printed caption at lower left of this highly-collectible Sporting News supplement (known in the hobby as a M101-2) inspired the more formal format. Not only is it one of the largest Lajoie autographs we've encountered, but it is assigned a stellar Mint 9 rating by the experts at PSA/DNA.

The supplement exhibits a small degree of edge wear common to the vast majority of these supplements, but no issues of any significant distraction. It is, quite simply, one of the very finest autographed Lajoie pieces we've encountered. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
