1939 Hall of Fame Grand Opening Program Signed by Ruth, Johnson, Wagner, More. We've only seen this program--signed or unsigned--once before, and you can find it in our Permanent Auction Archives with a final sale price of $113,525. That model was autographed by every living member of the 1939 induction class and many more future Hall of Famers who were in Cooperstown to participate in the game at Doubleday Field.

Remarkably, this second example emerged just weeks later, not quite as comprehensive as the aforementioned example, but still enormously desirable for its rarity and the few important autographs that reside inside. The twenty-four page booklet opens with black and white photography of the newly constructed museum and the bucolic setting on the shores of Otsego Lake, transitioning into biographical text regarding Abner Doubleday and his controversial title as the Father of Baseball.

The final page bears the 8/10 or better pencil autographs of seven men present for the Grand Opening ceremonies: Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, Arky Vaughan, Cookie Lavagetto and Clint Brown. A couple of the internal pages picturing the bronze plaques have been clipped out, likely having been autographed and thus harvested for an alternate display. A heavy vertical fold line passes through the center of each page to little distraction, and general handling and storage wear is likewise evident. But the intense scarcity of the booklet, and the importance of autographs dating to the official immortalization of baseball gods, renders condition concerns moot. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
