1938 Babe Ruth Signed Poem. We'd rank this one right behind "Casey at the Bat" among baseball-themed poetry, as author Leonard G. Meyers turns no shortage of fine phrases in this multi-stanza work lamenting the eventual disappearance of Babe Ruth from the professional diamond. The Indiana poet found Ruth very near that day, acquiring from the poem's subject a 9/10 black fountain pen signature upon the 13.5x8" (viewable area) page above text reading, "Signed by Babe Ruth at Terre Haute, Indiana, August 22nd, 1938, while Brooklyn was enroute (sic) to St. Louis."

For those not fully versed in the Bambino's biography, the 1938 Brooklyn Dodgers hired Ruth as a first base coach in an attempt to fill seats at Ebbets Field during a period that the Bums were exactly that--they'd finish seventh in the National League in their sixth consecutive sub-.500 campaign, and Ruth would never again hold a job in professional baseball after that single season of service. The page shows some wear at lower right, well clear of the signature an the poem. The piece is framed to dimensions of 21x15.5" and is consigned to this auction by the poet's son. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
