1938 Babe Ruth Jai-Alai Program and Full Ticket. The Bambino was a huge fan of this strange and fascinating pari-mutuel sport, and even occasionally competed on an amateur level in Miami during the 1920's before a muscle strain convinced him to quit the hobby. Our research has confirmed that the Babe did however come out of retirement briefly to play a match at New York City's Hippodrome, and the offered program and ticket are believed to date from that command performance. The program is simply a single 9x12" sheet folded at center, a delicate piece that has somehow miraculously survived in NRMT condition. A photographic image of the Babe appears on the back cover. The ticket dates from the "Gala Premier" on September 8, 1939, and features a gorgeous die-cut design with colorful graphics. The slightest wear suggests a very conservative EX-MT grade. Included in the lot is a print-out of a news article that references an appearance by the Babe in a Hippodrome jai-alai event.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
