Ruffing twirls a Game Two gem to take a commanding Fall Classic lead1937 New York Yankees World Series Championship Pocket Watch Presented to Charles "Red" Ruffing. The 1937 Fall Classic was a rematch of the 1936 edition, as the Giants and Yankees once again assured that all baseball eyes would be trained on the Big Apple in October. Ace right-hander Red Ruffing had recently completed his second of four consecutive twenty-win seasons when he took to the mound for Game Two before a capacity Yankee Stadium crowd of 57,675 against fellow twenty-game winner Cliff Melton. A Dick Bartell double and a Mel Ott single supplied the visitors with a quick first inning lead, but that lone run would prove to represent the entirety of Giants scoring. The Yankees would answer with its customary offensive onslaught to rather improbably repeat the lopsided eight to one final tally of Game One.
Presented is a gorgeous timepiece that awaited the future Hall of Fame hurler at the close of the five-game Series, one of our very favorite Championship awards from over a century of Major League hardware. The gold "Hamilton" brand pocket watch is a charming custom job, with "New York Yankees 1937" imprinted on the dial, and "World Champs" marking the hours in affixed gold lettering. Reverse of the case is engraved with the historic attribution: "Presented by Baseball Commissioner to Charles Ruffing."
The watch is attached to a simple stainless steel pocket knife by a wonderful gold chain built of inch-tall gold block letters spelling "RED RUFFING." We aren't certain if this chain was part of the original presentation, but it serves as a nice continuation of the gold-lettered theme of the watch dial. Distance from the bottom of the pocket watch to the furthest edge of the knife is approximately twenty-four inches (24") when fully extended. Watch measures 1.75" in diameter.
The timepiece presents without any condition flaws of note beyond light handling wear and a small dent near bottom edge of verso. A quick turn of the crown revives the ticking heart of the rare relic, though we'd assume a tune-up would be required for accurate timekeeping. Letter of provenance from the Ruffing family.
