1937 Babe Ruth, Babe Didrikson & John Montague Signed Ticket. Fascinating oddity is the first relic we've encountered to derive from this 1937 charity golf event on Long Island, a contest pitting a pair of legendary "Babes"--Ruth and Didrikson--against the nation's foremost golf hustler John Montague and top local female amateur Sylvia Annenberg. Ruth was two years removed from his baseball playing days, and Montague just weeks from acquittal for a 1930 armed robbery. Didrikson was, at the time, most famous for her world record performances at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, just beginning her pro golf career in earnest.

Google the November 14, 1937 event and you'll find plenty of fascinating details--far too many to report here--of a contest that ranks among the most bizarre in the history of the sport of golf. Crowd control was virtually non-existent, the surge of humanity upon the famous quartet eventually becoming too intrusive to allow further competition. "This is worse than any World Series," Ruth complained. "At least in the ballpark, the crowd has to stay in the stands." Didrikson likewise welcomed the abbreviation of the contest, saying, "I don't mind sugar daddies in their proper place, but I hope I don't ever have to play chip shots again while sitting on their knees."

The offered admission ticket (approximately 4x4" at largest dimensions) is autographed on verso by all four contestants, the signatures averaging 7/10 in strength. The ticket exhibits wear with creasing, chipping and tearing, but these issues remain mercifully clear of the autographs. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
