The only known Rusie letter on Earth!

1936 Amos Rusie Handwritten & Signed Letter. Born and bred in the great state of Indiana, Rusie earned his nickname "The Hoosier Thunderbolt" for a high-velocity fastball estimated to register in the mid to upper nineties. That blistering heat, and his well-earned reputation for wildness--his 289 walks in 1890 remains a single-season Major League record--made Rusie one of the most terrifying figures of the 19th century game. Most historians attribute the 1893 expansion of the pitching lane from fifty feet to its current sixty feet six inches to fear of Rusie, but even after that rule change he'd nearly kill fellow Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings in 1897, putting Ee-Yah into a four-day coma with a fastball to the skull.

Rusie pitched only three games in the twentieth century and effectively disappeared from the spotlight, passing away at age seventy-one in 1942. His posthumous Cooperstown induction in 1977 would inspire a resurgence in interest in this early ace, and force countless thousands of Hall of Fame autograph collectors to face the harsh truth that supply will forever trail demand by a vast margin. In fact, this is just the second Rusie autograph we have ever presented at auction.

It's a remarkable example thereof, a handwritten page (8x5") reminiscing about his glory days with Cap Anson and Billy Sunday. It is widely believed to be the only Rusie letter extant. The letter is penned in 7/10 ink and bears original mailing folds, but is otherwise free of condition flaws of any significance. A singularly spectacular relic which will allow one serious hobbyist to elevate his personal collection to a position where no others can follow. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
