Next stop, Bronx immortality!

1935 Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player Trophy Presented to Joe DiMaggio--Photo Matched! We all know the famous song, but in 1936 the roles were reversed, as the heart of San Francisco left the city for a new home at the other edge of the North American continent. One can only imagine the gut punch to fans of that city's Pacific Coast League franchise, who had watched their young outfielder positively demolish all competition in 1935 with a .398 batting average, thirty-four home runs, forty-eight doubles, eighteen triples, 154 runs batted in and 173 runs scored. There was zero suspense when the committee from The Sporting News announced the MVP of the PCL, no close second in the balloting.

The majesty of the achievement was dimmed only by the fact that the fans who had cheered DiMaggio through three seasons of excellence in the city by the bay weren't able to enjoy the trophy presentation, as the photo of Joltin' Joe admiring this impressive hardware (Getty Image #515567546) finds him wearing the pinstripes of the team he'd lead to nine World Championships, beginning with that rookie season of 1936.

The trophy is crafted in an art nouveau style, topped by a figural batter whose swing doesn't begin to compare to the beauty of its owner's. Twin pedestals lead down to a laurel-wreathed "victory" figure standing atop the black painted metal base where an engraved plaque is affixed. The text:

"Presented to Joe DiMaggio, San Francisco, In Recognition of Being Named The Most Valuable Player of Pacific Coast League in 1935 by a Committee for The Sporting News."

The trophy stands twenty-two inches (22") in height and has survived the nearly nine decades since its original presentation in remarkably fine condition, with original finish and natural copper patination.
