Description

1935 Lou Gehrig Signed Original Artwork. Splendid charcoal portrait of the mighty Iron Horse is the creation of "The Rembrandt of the Sports Pages" Thomas "Pap" Paprocki, whose syndicated column "Sports Slants by Pap" establishes his work among the most recognizable (and collectible) of the pre-war era. While Paprocki dates his 11x13" masterpiece to Gehrig's 1934 Triple Crown season, a handwritten notation dates its encounter with the subject to a landmark event the following year, the very day that Gehrig was named captain of the New York Yankees.

In 8/10 fountain pen ink, Gehrig writes, "To Alan - May I always prove myself worthy of your friendship - Cordially, Lou Gehrig - April 12, 1935."

As always, "The Iron Horse" shows here why he endeared himself to the hearts of not only New York Yankees fans, but Americans and people the world over. He was, quite simply, one of the most humble athletes to grace our stadiums and magazine covers, and his gracious attitude offered a more benign alternative to his bombastic counterpart, Babe Ruth. On slightly heavy paper stock, this piece has survived time well, showing only a small spot on Gehrig's tooth, some toning on the edges where it was likely framed for decades, and another spot on the blank back that has no bearing on the piece overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
