Description

Exceedingly rare specimen from the year Gehrig broke Everett Scott's streak record!

1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 Signed by Lou Gehrig, PSA Fair 1.5, Auto 8. On April 23rd of the year during which the presented trading card was issued, a tailing fastball from the left hand of Washington Senators ace Earl Whitehill struck Lou Gehrig in the head. For several frightening minutes, the stalwart first baseman lay in the batter's box as he struggled to regain his senses, then, predictably, stood up, brushed himself off, and took his base. Four months later, with his 1,308th consecutive appearance, he'd surpass Everett Scott to claim the title of the Major Leagues' most durable employee.

Today, nearly eight decades after Gehrig's tragic early passing at age thirty-eight, many in the medical community wonder if the official diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease--was indeed the irresistible force that claimed the immovable object of the Iron Horse. Could it instead have been brain injury, and Gehrig's unwillingness to convalesce, that was his undoing?

The answer figures to be yet another of our National Pastime's unsolvable mysteries, but there's no question of the rarity and desirability of this relic dating to the season of Gehrig's coronation as Consecutive Games King. The practice of presenting trading cards for signing was in its infancy when one pioneering soul met Gehrig with this card and a fountain pen in hand.

The black ink signature that results is assessed rather conservatively at 8/10 by PSA/DNA, as it is as fine a Gehrig autograph as we have ever encountered on cardboard, bearing the same autograph grade as the famous "Uncle Jimmy" example that commanded $194,700 in an October 2020 auction. The card itself exhibits the toning and corner wear typical of the issue, but presents without any significant visual distraction. Encapsulated by PSA Fair 1.5, Auto 8.
