Description

1932 Mohawk Colored Giants Negro League Broadside. Born in 1913, the Mohawk Colored Giants were the leading Negro baseball team of upstate New York, an independent squad with no League affiliation but a remarkable record of success against Major League legends from Walter Johnson to Grover Cleveland Alexander. The broadside boasts of Buck Ewing on the Giants roster--not, of course, the 19th century New York Giants star but rather the man who surrendered his starting catcher's job with the Homestead Grays to Josh Gibson. Legendary manager John McGraw once said of Ewing, "He'd be the greatest catcher in the big leagues but for his color."

The 14x20" card stock sign exhibits the handling and storage wear one would expect for a broadside of this advanced vintage but presents well, the creasing and staining only amplifying the antique aesthetic. Included is a photocopy of a newspaper clipping covering the contest, which saw the Giants claim a four-to-two victory.
