    Description

1931 Tour of Japan Medallion from The Lou Gehrig Collection.

UPDATE: This lot includes a letter of provenance from the consignor.

Fascinating design recalls the contemporary silver season passes issued at the Polo Grounds for New York Giants games, but this specimen is far more exotic, and the first of its kind we've encountered. Obverse features a play at the plate in relief, with text reading, "America vs. Japan Grand Base Ball Match, MCMXXXI." Verso provides American and Japanese flag imagery, a baseball with an Achilles wing, and Japanese language text. Dimensions are approximately 1x1.75". Fine condition. Letter of provenance from consignor.
