One Iconic Yankee Honors Another; Ruth Autograph Rates PSA/DNA Mint 9!
1931 Lou Gehrig All-America Baseball Team Certificate Signed by Babe Ruth. One was a boozing and philandering playboy who reveled in the spotlight. The other was a no-nonsense workhorse with little patience for tomfoolery. While the inevitable personality clash made theirs a tense and often troubled relationship, it rates as perhaps the most fruitful in Major League history, redefining the Bronx as the center of the baseball world. They may not have loved each other, but Ruth and Gehrig shared a profound, mutual respect. We see one such indication here in this gorgeous certificate issued to the Iron Horse for his exceptional 1931 season, one which saw him top the American League in home runs (46), RBI's (184), hits (211), and total bases (410). These certificates were essentially the equivalent of an All-Star team nod prior to the advent of the Midsummer Classic. Measuring approximately 13x16", the elegantly crafted display is anchored by the finest Ruth autograph you'll ever see, a rare and massive (five inches long!) black fountain pen "George Herman Ruth," rating a conservative Mint 9 by the experts at PSA/DNA. Below we find signatures from sportswriters in each American League town, applied with varying degrees of boldness, and a strong final signature from famed sports agent Christy Walsh, who represented both Ruth and Gehrig. The certificate exhibits some light toning and rumpling at lower right which remains well clear of Ruth's signature and does little to distract the eye. The piece is professionally matted and framed to full dimensions of 22x26". These All-American Team certificates have been appearing on the public auction block with progressively less frequency with each passing year, and a Gehrig specimen obviously rates near the peak of desirability.
Please note that this is the only Gehrig All-America certificate ever to surface in the collecting hobby.
