    Description

1931 Branch Rickey & William Veeck Sr. Signed Letter of Transfer Trading Burleigh Grimes for Hack Wilson!
The annals of baseball history are filled with trades. Sometimes a change of scenery is the perfect tonic. This letter of transfer reminds us all how short the window can be for even a Hall of Famer. While only standing 5-6, Hack Wilson was the National League's best slugger for a short period and even rivaled the great Babe Ruth atop the home run list. Alcohol eventually intervened and Wilson would toil in obscurity for a few years before dying at the young age of 48 - a mere shell of his former self. Spit baller Burleigh Grimes was allowed to throw the then illegal pitch because it was grandfathered into the game.

This letter of transfer between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs transferred Grimes' rights to the Cubs for Hack Wilson and Arthur "Bud" Teachout. Less than a month after joining the Cardinals, Wilson was jettisoned to Brooklyn where he would play three seasons. Hall of Fame executive, and baseball trailblazer, Branch Rickey and Williams Veeck Sr. signed the appropriate slots on the bottom of this historic document, Grimes is only an identifier. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
