    Description

1931 Al Simmons All America Baseball Team Certificate Signed by Babe Ruth. Like the 1928 example likewise on offer in this Platinum Night event, the offered specimen was consigned to Heritage by the Simmons family directly, and thus makes its first appearance on the hobby's auction block. The 1931 season would represent the third in a row that saw Connie Mack's white elephants stampede its way to the American League pennant, stymying a New York Yankees team widely considered among the greatest ever assembled.

The greatest star of that Bronx juggernaut is the prime attraction here, his blue fountain pen ink signature registering at 8/10 strength in the rare and enormously desirable "George H. 'Babe' Ruth" format. The Babe's autograph joins that of a jury of sportswriters who assisted in designating Simmons as one of baseball's top outfielders. The Cincinnati representative is missing, while the rest appear in 6/10 or superior condition.

The 1931 season was arguably Simmons' personal best, his .390 batting average both a career high and sufficient for his second consecutive American League batting championship. Simmons would finish third in American League MVP voting behind winner and teammate Lefty Grove and iconic slugger Lou Gehrig.

The 17x14" certificate clearly spent the bulk of its nine decades in a frame, as the relic is free of any tearing, creasing or staining one might expect to encounter on a large paper item of this vintage. Only the lightest handling and storage wear is evident today. Letter of provenance from Simmons family. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
