1930's Milwaukee Giants Negro League Broadside. Certainly one of the finest condition Negro League broadsides you'll ever see, as the rare specimens that have survived the decades are typically much the worse for wear. Our offering breaks from tradition most impressively, rating an unprecedented NRMT-MT, with not so much as a stray bit of foxing to ruin the fun. Though listed as the "Milwaukee Giants," our research suggests that the nickname "Giants" was so commonly used by Negro teams that it came to be used as a sort of "catch all" term for black squads, and that this team is in fact the noted Milwaukee Bears. If we are correct in this supposition, and we're quite certain that we are, then team names once handwritten into the black space below the word "vs." on other specimens of this broadside would have included the Kansas City Monarchs and the St. Louis Stars, the cream of the Negro League crop. This unused broadside most notably features a panoramic image of the team, with each identified by surname and position, and encouraging words to those who might wish to attend: "The Giants Came From Milwaukee With All Clean and Real Ball Players, and Have the Best Reputation of Any Club on the Road---These Games Should Be the Best Games of the Season." The piece measures 13x21" and is matted and framed to overall dimensions of 20x28".
