    Description

1930's Lou Gehrig Handwritten & Signed Postcard from The Beatrice Wade Collection. Why is baseball such a worldwide phenomenon? In the 1930's, Major League stars made a pilgrimage to Japan to help popularize our great game. Tours of Japan were held in 1931 and '34 with the likes of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig serving as headliners. Gehrig was around for both tours while Ruth only participated in the '34 series. The Iron Horse penned this postcard to Beatrice Wade during one of his journeys overseas. "If you haven't left our rank yet, please consider my suggestion that this is an ideal spot for your honeymoon. It ought to be just about that time now. Best of luck in your new venture - Lou" is written by Gehrig in 10/10 black fountain pen. Gehrig also addressed the postcard to Wade's residence. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The Beatrice Wade Collection of Baseball Autographs.

The pages that follow document the fascinating tale of Beatrice Wade, a beautiful Golden Age socialite from Detroit who found herself at the center of a social circle that included some of the biggest names in baseball. While her rooting interests may have leaned toward the Tigers of her Motor City hometown, it would appear that her closest relationships involved the iconic New York Yankees slugging tandem of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, and their wives.

Ms. Wade passed away in 1981, but her collection was only recently unearthed by our consignor, the daughter of Wade's cousin. All contents of The Beatrice Wade Collection make their hobby debut in this Platinum Night auction.
