    Description

1930 Lou Gehrig Handwritten & Signed Postcard from The Beatrice Wade Collection. When Lou Gehrig was playing baseball, Spring Training was used to get back in shape. Those winter pounds would melt off under the Florida sun. For much of their illustrious history, the Yankees got ready for the upcoming baseball season in St. Petersburg. The Iron Horse took a little time away from the diamond when he penned this postcard to Beatrice Wade in March of 1930. The entire postcard is in Gehrig's capable hand and he signed off "Lou". "Beautiful here but that's all there is to do admire the beauty and I have not been taught how" is written in black fountain pen by Gehrig. He also addressed the postcard to Wade's hometown of Detroit. Creasing appears throughout but the writing is not compromised. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The Beatrice Wade Collection of Baseball Autographs.

The pages that follow document the fascinating tale of Beatrice Wade, a beautiful Golden Age socialite from Detroit who found herself at the center of a social circle that included some of the biggest names in baseball. While her rooting interests may have leaned toward the Tigers of her Motor City hometown, it would appear that her closest relationships involved the iconic New York Yankees slugging tandem of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, and their wives.

Ms. Wade passed away in 1981, but her collection was only recently unearthed by our consignor, the daughter of Wade's cousin. All contents of The Beatrice Wade Collection make their hobby debut in this Platinum Night auction.
