    Description

1929 Lou Gehrig Signed Christmas Card from The Beatrice Wade Collection. It's an extraordinary illustration of the humility of the legendary slugger, who set about the rather mundane task of addressing and signing Christmas cards himself, bucking the common tradition of the day of tasking the wife with such duties (see the Ruth family Christmas cards within this auction). The modern collecting world is the grateful beneficiary of Gehrig's evolved worldview, as it is his distinctive script that applies the address to the included mailing envelope, and an 8/10 black ink signature to the card contained within. Postmark is from Gehrig's hometown of New Rochelle, NY, just three days before Christmas. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The Beatrice Wade Collection of Baseball Autographs.

The pages that follow document the fascinating tale of Beatrice Wade, a beautiful Golden Age socialite from Detroit who found herself at the center of a social circle that included some of the biggest names in baseball. While her rooting interests may have leaned toward the Tigers of her Motor City hometown, it would appear that her closest relationships involved the iconic New York Yankees slugging tandem of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, and their wives.

Ms. Wade passed away in 1981, but her collection was only recently unearthed by our consignor, the daughter of Wade's cousin. All contents of The Beatrice Wade Collection make their hobby debut in this Platinum Night auction.
