1927 William Baker (Philadelphia Phillies Owner) Signed Letter with Great Content.

A former New York City Police Commissioner, William Baker owned the Philadelphia Phillies from 1913 till his death in 1930, and the Baker Bowl was named after him. With the exception of 1915, his franchise was synonymous with dismal play and cellar finishes. That culture of losing, combined with a public belief that Baker was stingy (he employed only one scout, wouldn't give Pete Alexander a raise, and used a flock of sheep to trim the grass at the Baker Bowl) resulted in him being continuously maligned by the local press.

In this remarkable two-page, typed letter on stunning "Philadelphia National League Club" letterhead with an embossed gold/blue team seal featuring William Penn, owner Baker tenders a lengthy and incredibly frank response to an angry fan.

"Ordinarily I would not reply to a letter of this kind...How ridiculous is the thought that I don't want the "Phillies" to win the pennant when most all the money I have is invested in the Club...If you will turn back the pages of baseball to 1915, you will find that the "Phillies" won their first pennant under my ownership...If I had invested the money I put in the Philadelphia Club in the Savings Bank at 4%, I would have been better off today...I am a native Pennsylvanian and nothing would please me more than to give the fans of Philadelphia a pennant winning club. If my health holds out, I hope to do it sometime in the very near future."

Sadly, Baker would be dead three years later and the Phillies would not win another pennant till 1950. Signed in NRMT black fountain pen. The autograph is rare and the letter contains unique historical value. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic.
