1927 Babe Ruth Saxophone Presented to Him by Paul Whiteman. From the reaction of his buddy Lou, it looks as if the Babe was not quite as handy with the saxophone as he was with a Louisville Slugger, but then they never did call him the Sultan of Song. Presented here is the horn Ruth is tooting in this charming and famous photograph, presented to him during his finest professional season by the nation's most popular band leader. This antique instrument is surely worth a nice sum of money in its own right, elegantly crafted by the noteworthy Buescher company as the ornate design on the front of the horn signifies. Engraved on the interior lip of the horn is the all-important engraved dedication, "Paul Whitemam (sic) to Babe Ruth 1927." Both the manufacturer's logo and the engraving to Ruth are barely discernible in the photograph of the Yankee legends.

The saxophone remains in fantastic undamaged condition in a non-contemporary case, and includes a photocopy of the letter of provenance issued when the horn was initially sold at auction a decade ago. It explains that Ruth had given the instrument to the president of Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York as a gift in lieu of payment for medical services rendered to his wife. The saxophone was initially consigned by the grandson of the doctor. A modern print of the Ruth and Gehrig photo is likewise included in the lot. Surely one of the most unique and interesting pieces of Ruth memorabilia to reach the auction block in recent memory.
