With letter of provenance from Lazzeri's son
1926-37 Tony Lazzeri Game Used Fielder's Glove, PSA/DNA Authentic. There's no question that the structure of New York Yankees supremacy over the 1920's and 1930's Major Leagues has been constructed upon a foundation of lumber, thus the time is long overdue to give the role of leather its proper recognition as an essential ingredient of its construction. Baseball historians are to be forgiven for looking past Lazzeri's essential contributions at second base, as he did represent a shift in the natural order nearly as large as that of his teammates Ruth and Gehrig. With eighteen home runs during the Murderer's Row season of 1927, Lazzeri ranked third in the Majors behind those legendary sluggers--a feat impressive for any man, but truly staggering for a middle infielder. With eighteen long balls that year, Lazzeri outproduced all other second sackers of the league combined.Often lost beneath the shadow of that extraordinary offensive production was the slick defensive mastery of the Italian superstar, whose 525 assists during the 1927 season were over 100 better than his next-closest teammate. Neither the experts at MEARS nor Lazzeri's son, whose letter of provenance attends, can narrow the precise vintage of the glove to less than a decade's width, but the assurance of authenticity the family derivation provides, and its perfect fidelity to period imagery, establishes the supple leather relic as an elite treasure of Yankeedom.
Most notable in button-back "Spalding" beauty is the taped pocket customization, which appears in a pair of photographs (copies only) of Lazzeri hanging out with manager Joe McCarthy and the noble Iron Horse. Heavy game wear suggests multiple seasons of wear, but the piece presents without any damage of note beyond minor oxidation to the metal grommets guiding the leather stitching.
Bats and jerseys come and go, and while they're certainly great collecting treasures when associated with a player of Hall of Fame caliber, there's something truly special about the fielder's glove. No companion in a ballplayer's toolbox is more constant or faithful, none more infused with innumerable hours of history. A genuine treasure for the elite collector. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic. Letter of provenance from son of Tony Lazzeri.
