Description

The Babe gets paid!

1925 George H. (Babe) Ruth Signed New York Yankees Payroll Check, PSA/DNA Authentic. This was the season of "The Bellyache Heard 'round the World," although baseball historians have since largely abandoned the theory that it was Ruth's gluttony that kept him out of the Yankee line-up until June, believing that either alcoholism or a sexually transmitted disease was the more likely culprit. But by the time this check was issued to the highest-paid athlete in the world, the Babe was back in action, although he was ultimately unable to wrest the American League pennant from the grip of the newly-relevant Washington Senators.

Obverse supplies the black fountain pen ink signatures of two other Cooperstown immortals--Ed Barrow and Jacob Ruppert--who authorize the substantial payment. Ruth's rare signature format endorses the check on verso, his "Geo. H. Ruth" applied with a delicate but elegant touch that largely dodges the subsequent punch stamping executed by the bank. Note that Ruth's room charges from recent travels are deducted in a typed itemized list above his signature. Check has been folded vertically at center but that line is only apparent upon close inspection and does not intersect with any autograph. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Authentic.
