Ex-Paul Hill Collection, acquired with Huntzinger's Tour uniform

1924 Walter Huntzinger Game Worn New York Giants World Tour Sweater. Pre-war "warm-up" garments are highly coveted by uniform collectors for two reasons. First and foremost, the knitted wool format is particularly gorgeous, and so different from the modern evolution of the style that they are uniquely proficient in evoking the spirit of the early game. Check our auction archives for Harry Hooper's 1912 Red Sox sweater, for example--a garment that commanded $90,000 at auction earlier this year.

The elite rarity is the other half of the equation, with just a handful of examples surviving to present day, far fewer than even the rare-as-hen's-teeth uniforms from the 1920's and earlier

But this spectacular relic adds still another point of intrigue: participation in the historic 1924 Baseball World Tour. It was acquired by famed collector Paul Hill from the Huntzinger family along with the World Tour uniform that likewise appears within this Platinum Night auction, a point that solidifies the special attribution. We also note that the Baseball Hall of Fame has both a Giants and a White Sox sweater from the Tour, the former perfectly matching this format.

The heavy navy wool cardigan is elegant in its simplicity, with a red and white felt block-lettered "Giants" across the chest, but no other tagging or identifiers. It is 100% original and unaltered, and lacking any condition issues of distraction. Included with the garment is a 1927 Walter Huntzinger presentational certificate that relates to the sweater only in regard to the identity of the owner. The certificate was likewise acquired at the same time as the other Huntzinger garments. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
