1924 Christy Mathewson Signed Player Transfer Agreement, PSA/DNA
Mint 9.The last full year of Matty's life found the Hall of Fame pitcher hard at work toward his objective of dragging his Boston Braves from the basement of the National League following back-to-back 100-loss seasons. Sadly, his quest would go unfulfilled, as the hapless Beantown ballclub would ultimately finish dead-last yet again in 1924, unable to avoid triple-digit losses.
This agreement sadly would only compound those woes, as the four thousand dollars paid to the Chicago Cubs for the services of John Kelleher would result in a single plate appearance--a strikeout--for the Braves cause.
But, nearly a century later, the struggles of Mathewson's final year of service to our national pastime serve only to further ennoble one of the most celebrated figures immortalized at Cooperstown. Set upon an immutable course to early death from the moment of his exposure to poison gas during a World War I training accident, the 373-game winner played out his hand to the end.
His black fountain pen signature at the bottom of this single legal page is as fine as any we've encountered, applied beneath that of Chicago Cubs president Bill Veeck, Sr., father of his namesake who would follow Mathewson to Cooperstown. Each signature has been rated 9/10 by the experts at PSA/DNA. The document itself is likewise preserved in flawless condition, with only original storage folds to report.
