1923 Yankee Stadium Grand Opening Ticket Stub & Program. It's hard to believe that it's been over six years since Jeter and the boys walked off the field at the House that Ruth Built for the final time, bringing to an end eighty-five years of pinstriped history that began the day this remarkable pair of artifacts was issued. While the reproductions of the inaugural program, issued at the time of the 1976 Stadium reopening, are fairly commonly encountered, just a scant few have survived from the April 18, 1923 affair that saw the Yankees top the rival Boston Red Sox on the strength of Babe Ruth's three-run homer, the first ever hit at the park.

Stubs from the game are rarer still, and while the sole "1923" marking on the relic is in the hand of the original owner, the printed "Wednesday April 18th" and game "1" text assures attribution to that first World Championship season, as does the "Canada Dry" advertising on reverse.

The program exhibits the degree of wear typical of the few surviving examples, with both front and back cover loose but present, each exhibiting some loss at the edges and corners, some vintage tape and general soiling. All but a few of the interior pages remain bound by their staples, but every page is present and accounted for, including the pencil-scored center pages that recorded the historic action, including Ruth's third inning home run, the first in Stadium history.

The ticket stub likewise exhibits the manner of wear common to nearly all known examples--a population that could be counted on one hand--with creasing and soiling similar to that of its matching program, and a small handwritten notation on front (ink) and back (pencil). But the intense rarity and desirability of each of these important relics is more than enough to silence any quibbles about condition. Each is more than sturdy enough to serve as a solid foundation for the finest of private Yankees collections. Ticket is encapsulated, PSA Authentic.
