    Description

1923 Christy Mathewson Signed Boston Braves Player Transfer. In the gruff and gritty age of the Dead Ball, the college educated Matty was a welcome anomaly, a favorite of male fans for his dominance on the mound and of the ladies for his blue-eyed good looks and gentlemanly comportment. Accidental exposure to mustard gas during a World War I training exercise would wreak havoc on his health in the years following his tour of duty, the primary catalyst for his fatal tuberculosis at age forty-five.

Two years before his passing, in his role as president of the Boston Braves, Matty applied his 9/10 black fountain pen signature to the bottom right corner of this 4x6" document assigning infielder Ernie Padgett to the Memphis farm club. Most of the finest Mathewson autograph exemplars derive from his executive service in these final years of his life, with this offering a strong example thereof. A vertical center fold line remains well clear of the autograph, and there are no other condition issues of note. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
