1922 Christy Mathewson Signed Check Display, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. In the rough and tumble Dead Ball Era of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. The 373-game winning right-hander drew this check from his account in Saranac Lake, New York, a world-renowned center for the treatment of tuberculosis, which Matty had contracted as a result of a poison gas accident during training for the First World War.The text of the check is penned in another hand, but the all-important signature is the genuine article, applied with 9+/10 boldness, one of the finest autographs we've encountered from Big Six. The check is folded vertically at center and cancelled with punch coding, but neither of these issues affects the signature. It is matted and framed beneath an oversized modern photographic print of the legend in his pitching prime to final dimensions of 29x21". Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, NM-MT 8.
