Description

The rarest of the 1920's figural trophies...

1920's Dieges & Clust "Safe" Figural Baseball Trophy. The Ty Cobb "Safe" Baseball Trophy by Dieges & Clust stands as one of the most visually striking and historically significant figural baseball trophies of the early 20th century. Created by the renowned New York jewelers Dieges & Clust—best known for producing early World Series press pins and championship rings—this trophy features a dramatic bronze figure of Ty Cobb sliding into a base, capturing the intensity and aggression that defined his legendary playing style. Cobb, who compiled a career .366 batting average and over 4,000 hits, was among the inaugural class of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, and his prominence in the sport makes any artifact bearing his likeness especially desirable.

Believed to date from the early to mid-1920s, the trophy was likely awarded in conjunction with semi-professional or promotional baseball events. Its detailed casting and dynamic composition represent the height of the period's craftsmanship. Unlike the more commonly found "Spalding" baseball trophies produced by Dieges & Clust during the same era, the Cobb "Safe" trophy is exceedingly rare, with fewer than ten known examples. This comparison highlights just how exclusive and elusive the piece truly is. The combination of Cobb's enduring legacy, the artistry of Dieges & Clust, and the trophy's extreme scarcity make it an elite-level acquisition for collectors of baseball memorabilia and early American sports art.

A plaque affixed to the black lacquered base is a metal plaque with stamped text reading, "Championship Trophy, Press, Spalding, City Amateur League, 1929." At its largest dimensions, the trophy measures 12x6x9". Some handling/storage wear appears on the wooden base, as does a "Made by Dieges & Clust" affixed metal tag, but otherwise the important relic presents beautifully.

Auction Type
Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding and you must be on an individual lot page to reflect the accurate time remaining for that particular lot.
