1920's Baseball Silk Cloth Original Ink Drawings Collection by George M. Joyce. For many, baseball is so much more than just a game. It is a passion that for many goes far beyond "spectator" status. Such is the case with George M. Joyce (1895-1950). His life-long love of the game expressed via his collecting, service as an umpire and as a self taught artist producing paintings and drawings of a western theme and the baseball players and managers he had personally met. He was a member of the "Association of Professional Ball Players of America," his contributions recognized by Win Clark, Secretary of the APBPA upon hearing of his passing in 1950. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in El Paso, TX, the life-long Detroit Tigers fan worked as a railroad conductor to support his family. After serving in the military, Mr. Joyce became a professional umpire in the Nebraska State League and it was that era when these fourteen approx. 18x18" India ink drawings on golden silk cloth were produced. Some of the subjects include "Stars of 1927," "Philadelphia Athletes Board of Strategy" w/Collins-Mack-Gleason, "Athletic Pitching Aces of 1929," "Philadelphia Athletics Outfield of 1928" with Simmons-Cobb-Speaker (in color) plus others. Each work was numbered in the upper right and signed at the bottom by the artist. They are the only examples of these works which still exist. Each is wholly unique and a tribute to a true fan of the game. See our web site for more images, a detailed list of the silks and more information about our artist.
